Residential Writing Course: Fiction - Write here, write now

  • Arvon Foundation Totleigh Barton Beaworthy, England, EX21 5NS United Kingdom (map)

This course will give you the chance to develop your storytelling skills in a supportive, inspiring environment: whether you’re planning a novel, wrestling with a work-in-progress, or have always wanted to write short stories but don’t know where to start, this week will transform your will to write into words on the page. Award-winning novelists and experienced creative writing teachers Maame Blue and Christopher Wakling will lead workshops on sources of inspiration, making a start, creating compelling characters, developing plot and structure, manipulating suspense, sharpening dialogue, building a convincing setting, nailing your ending and improving your draft with focussed editing. Expect plenty of examples and exercises: you will read and write a great deal this week. In addition, you will have the chance to attend one-to-one tutorials and receive tailored feedback on your work. Whatever stage you’re at as a writer of fiction, this course will help you unlock, build and perfect your story.
